Families of Long Island hit-and-run victims call for stiffer penalties

Families of victims killed in hit-and-run crashes gathered Tuesday with Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota to renew a call to increase penalties for drivers who flee the scene of serious or fatal collisions. "Quite frankly, right now the penalties for a hit-and-run driver are such that it is almost an encouragement for people to leave the scene," Spota said at a news conference Tuesday morning.
