Long Island sends almost $28 billion more to the federal and state governments than it gets back, and that deficit is growing, according to a new report scheduled to be released Tuesday. Residents and businesses in Nassau and Suffolk counties paid $57.5 billion in taxes and fees to Washington and Albany in 2013 and received about $30 billion in government services, spending, pension checks and aid.

Two Men Arrested in Connection With a Manorville Home Rental Scam

February 2, 2015 - Suffolk County Police have arrested two men in connection with a rental scam during which they broke into a Manorville home and one of the men posed as the landlord and fraudulently rented the property. Jose Laboy and Barry McDaniel broke into a vacant home, located on Sunrise Service Road North, sometime between January 30 and February 1 and changed the locks to the residence.

Cause of fire at Suffolk County clerk's records site investigated

The Suffolk County police arson squad is investigating the cause of a fire that occurred Jan. 26 on the second floor of a records annex at the county clerk's office in Riverhead. Nicole DeLuca, spokeswoman for Clerk Judith Pascale, said no records were destroyed because the sprinkler system kicked in immediately and the Riverhead Fire Department responded within minutes.
